Availability may depend on the individual doctor.

Is Hope Island Medical Centre accepting new patients?

New patients are welcome, subject to individual doctors’ availability. New patients generally need to book two consecutive appointment times. Please telephone reception on (07) 5510 8199 for assistance or check the online booking system.

Where is Hope Island Medical Centre?

Hope Island Medical Centre is located at 10 Santa Barbara Road, Hope Island QLD 4212, on the northern Gold Coast.

How do I book an appointment?

Standard GP appointments can be booked through the secure HotDoc online booking system. Please telephone reception for health assessments, immunisations, chronic condition management plans, women’s health procedures, minor procedures and other appointments requiring additional time or preparation.

Can every GP provide every service listed on the website?

No. Doctors have different qualifications, experience and clinical interests. Please contact reception so the team can help you select an appropriate doctor and appointment type.

Is Hope Island Medical Centre a bulk-billing practice?

Hope Island Medical Centre is a mixed-billing practice. Each independent GP determines their own fees and billing arrangements. Most doctors bulk bill eligible pensioners, healthcare card holders and children under 16. Please confirm the applicable fee when booking.

Do I need a referral to see a GP at Hope Island Medical Centre?

No referral is normally required for a general practice appointment. A referral or other documentation may be required for certain tests, procedures or coordinated services. Reception can advise you when booking.

What should I bring to my appointment?

Please bring your Medicare card, any concession card, a current medication list and relevant reports, referrals or hospital correspondence. New patients should allow sufficient time to complete registration information.

Can I book a longer appointment?

Yes. Please book a longer consultation if you have several concerns, require a detailed assessment, need paperwork completed or expect a complex discussion. Reception can help select the correct appointment length.

Can I use online booking for an urgent medical problem?

Online booking is not suitable for emergency care. Call 000 or attend an emergency department for a life-threatening emergency. For an urgent but non-life-threatening concern, telephone reception to discuss appointment availability.

Can I contact my doctor by email?

Email enquiries should be sent through reception, but email is not the preferred method for medical communication and must never be used for urgent matters. Because email confidentiality cannot be guaranteed, a doctor or designated staff member may respond by telephone.

Does the medical centre provide interpreter assistance?

Interpreter assistance can be arranged for patients who need help communicating. Please tell reception when booking so appropriate arrangements can be discussed.

Service-Specific FAQs

The answers below relate to particular services. Availability of any service depends on the individual doctor’s qualifications, interests and appointment availability.

Skin Cancer Checks

Do you provide full skin cancer checks in Hope Island?

Yes. The Hope Island Skin Cancer Clinic offers spot checks and full skin checks with doctors who have an interest in and additional qualifications in skin cancer medicine. Please telephone the clinic so the appropriate doctor and appointment length can be arranged.

When should I arrange a skin check?

Consider a skin check if you notice a new or changing mole or spot, have significant sun exposure, have previously had skin cancer or are concerned about your individual risk. A doctor can recommend an appropriate surveillance schedule.

Do I need a referral for a skin cancer check?

No GP referral is generally required. Please telephone the clinic directly to arrange an appointment.

Can the doctor biopsy or remove a suspicious lesion?

Where clinically appropriate, the doctor may recommend a biopsy or removal. The proposed procedure, alternatives, fees and expected Medicare rebate will be explained before treatment proceeds.

Assessments may be available for eligible age and risk groups, including people aged 75 and over, people aged 45–49 at risk of chronic disease, people aged 40–49 at high risk of diabetes and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander patients. Eligibility should be confirmed with the practice.

Can I book a health assessment or care plan online?

These appointments should be arranged by telephone because they may require eligibility checks, additional time and coordination with the nursing team.

Can I book a vaccination online?

Vaccination appointments should be booked through reception so vaccine availability, eligibility, prescriptions and any associated fees can be checked.

How far before overseas travel should I see a GP?

Arrange a travel-medicine consultation as early as possible, preferably six weeks before departure. Recommendations depend on the destination, itinerary, medical history and previous vaccinations.

Home Visits & Aged Care

Does Hope Island Medical Centre provide home visits?

A home visit may be considered for an established patient living within six kilometres of the practice when their condition prevents attendance. The treating GP decides whether a home visit is clinically appropriate and available.

Are home visits bulk billed?

No. The website states that home visits are privately billed, with payment required on the day and any applicable Medicare rebate facilitated.

Do the doctors visit residential aged-care homes?

Some doctors visit local residential aged-care facilities. Acceptance and ongoing care depend on the individual GP, location, capacity and the patient’s clinical circumstances.

Medicals, Testing & WorkCover

Do you provide driver’s licence and pre-employment medicals?

Yes. Selected GPs provide driver’s licence, employment and insurance medical examinations. Please contact reception to confirm the required appointment length, documentation, tests and fees.

What tests are available onsite?

Available testing may include ECG, spirometry, blood-pressure monitoring, Holter monitoring, ankle-brachial index testing, pregnancy testing, hearing testing and saliva drug screening. Clinical suitability and availability should be confirmed before booking.

Can I see a GP for a WorkCover injury?

Yes. The practice assesses work-related injuries and can issue appropriate workers’ compensation medical certificates. Patients should bring their employer and claim information and should be prepared to pay applicable fees at the time of consultation.

Does Medicare cover a WorkCover consultation?

Medicare does not cover medical expenses for an accepted WorkCover claim. Payment and reimbursement arrangements depend on the claim’s status. Reception can explain the practice’s administrative requirements, but claim decisions are made by WorkCover or the relevant insurer.

Cancer Screening

What cancer screening programs can my GP help me access?

The GPs at Hope Island Medical Centre can discuss your individual cancer risk and help you access appropriate national screening programs, including:

  • Breast cancer screening: Assessment of breast symptoms and risk factors, advice about screening mammograms and guidance on accessing BreastScreen services.
  • Cervical cancer screening: Cervical screening consultations, including discussion of whether clinician-collected or self-collected testing is appropriate.
  • Bowel cancer screening: Advice about the National Bowel Cancer Screening Program, assistance understanding screening kits and follow-up of abnormal results.
  • Lung cancer screening: Assessment of eligibility for the National Lung Cancer Screening Program, including smoking history, and referral for appropriate screening where indicated.

Your doctor can explain which screening tests are appropriate for your age, medical history, family history and other risk factors. If you have symptoms or concerns, do not wait for a routine screening invitation—book an appointment with your GP.

To discuss cancer screening or arrange an appointment, telephone Hope Island Medical Centre on (07) 5510 8199.
